I know only too well just how many of you who have been diagnosed with Diverticular Disease and diverticulitis are left feeling overwhelmed and unsupported. I have heard from countless people, who after diagnosis, are often left to figure out how to manage their health on their own, without adequate guidance or information.
That’s why I knew there was a need for our free downloadable Diverticular Disease Fact Sheet, which I put together after hearing from so many people struggling to find the advice they needed to manage their symptoms. The fact sheet is packed with valuable information on how to manage diverticular symptoms, with dietary guidance, lifestyle tips, and supplement recommendations that can make a real difference.
The response to this fact sheet has been nothing short of overwhelming and to mark the first-ever Diverticular Disease Awareness Month this October, I wanted to reshare a video I made in response to the popularity of the fact sheet on our Just For Tummies Facebook page.
In the video, I explain how diverticular pockets develop, how it’s important to avoid constipation as this can increase the risk of painful flare-ups, and I answer this frequently asked question:
Can I eat nuts and seeds?
While nuts and seeds offer fantastic health benefits – they’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and other essential nutrients – they can sometimes get trapped in diverticular pockets. To avoid this, I always recommend milling seeds and nuts. In the video, I show you how easy it is to grind seeds to a powder using a basic coffee grinder, making them safer to consume.
I also touch on how the tiny seeds found in strawberries and raspberries can trigger flare-ups, which may result in a painful episode and the need for antibiotics. In these cases, it’s best to avoid them and find an alternative soft fruit to enjoy.
