Learn about natural solutions to resolve acid reflux and heartburn
My name is Linda, and I have been a natural health therapist for over 30 years, specialising in digestive and gut health – I run a busy natural health clinic in Nottingham, and I’m the founder of Just For Tummies, the UK’s only supplement range dedicated to helping people who have digestive and gut problems.
The reason I’ve written a fact sheet about acid reflux and heartburn stems from the increasing number of enquiries I receive from people who are struggling with the constant burning sensation in their stomach, oesophagus, and sometimes their throat, despite taking antacid medications. And it isn’t only adults – more and more children are suffering from these symptoms that were, at one time, only experienced by older people. Babies and children are being prescribed antacids. This can’t be right, can it?!
We have to remember that for every action there is a reaction, and this applies to antacid medication too. The medication, especially the strong proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) will put your stomach acid to almost zero. Now stomach acid is there for a reason – to help digest your food and to help neutralise any pathogen, particularly bacterial and/or parasite, from getting into your gut via the oral route. If you have very little stomach acid, these disease-causing bugs and parasites will have free reign, passing through your stomach, into your intestines, and from there to other organs/systems of your body. This has the potential to increase your risk of getting IBS-type symptoms and bowel infections, not to mention the impact on your immune system and mental health, as the strong antacids create an imbalance in your gut microbiome. We also need stomach acid to help absorb nutrients and minerals like calcium and iron to ensure we have strong bones and teeth, and plenty of energy, not to mention Vitamin B12, absorption of which is also affected by PPIs. It’s a crucial vitamin involved in maintaining healthy blood cells, nerves, DNA, and helps to prevent a type of anaemia that can make you feel tired and weak. If you have been on long-term PPIs and are feeling very tired, make an appointment to see your GP and discuss this. So you can see what a major role stomach acid plays to not only our digestive system but to our overall health and wellbeing.
