    Despite its sometimes misleading name, heartburn i Despite its sometimes misleading name, heartburn is caused by the regurgitation of stomach acid upwards into the oesophagus, not the heart. In addition to heartburn, there are several other symptoms that indicate you have acid damage, including: Abdominal bloating Indigestion Feeling out of breath Post-nasal drip Feeling of a lump in the throat Feeling that food is not going down/getting stuck A sore throat that just appears out of nowhere Irritating cough, lasting longer than eight weeks Hoarseness Mucous clearing in your throat Constant throat-clearing Waking up choking Burning throat that wakes you up Due to the expanding number of symptoms, it can be difficult to get a correct diagnosis of acid reflux and people often just accept symptoms. Many see their GP and are misdiagnosed. It can be hard to determine if the symptoms are due to an allergy, a lung condition, or a digestive issue and it may take a long time to get a correct diagnosis of acid reflux, oesophagitis, Barrett’s Oesopahagus (BA) or, heaven forbid, oesophageal cancer.     I always think of Easter as a time of reflection – permission to let go of the old and look forward to new beginnings. Easter is the most important day in the Christian calendar. It marks the celebration of the day that Christians believe Jesus was resurrected. It’s not just Christianity that marks the theme of resurrection, birth, and renewal; every major religion and pagans have some kind of celebration about the return or resurgence of spring, with hope and new beginnings as a theme. Just as the seasons change throughout the year, I believe that Easter is about the seasons of our lives changing; we can all pause and reflect and spend time with the people who mean the most to us. Easter reminds us that there is hope for our future, especially after a difficult struggle. It’s a time to celebrate nature's new year of growth after the cold, dark days of winter. As the days lengthen and warm, the sap begins to rise, green leaves shoot forth, and animals are mating and giving birth. Long before the Christian Easter, people celebrated a spring festival by rejoicing over the rebirth of life in the fields and forests. There is no reason why we can't continue this traditional secular celebration of the changing seasons, wouldn’t you agree? However you are marking this long weekend, I hope you feel renewed by the change of season and filled with hope for the days to come.
