Did you know that if bowel cancer is caught in its early stages, there is a greater than 90% chance of a cure? Early detection can truly save lives, which is why Bowel Cancer Awareness month is such an important time to highlight both the risks and the resources available to help.
Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. It develops from tiny bumps of cells inside the bowel, known as polyps. While most polyps remain benign, around one in ten can develop into cancer. Almost 90% of people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over the age of 60.
New screening eligibility
As part of ongoing efforts to improve early detection, NHS England has recently expanded eligibility for bowel cancer home-testing kits (faecal immunochemical tests, or FIT). Previously, home FIT kits were offered every two years to those aged 54 to 74 in England.
Now, home FIT kits are available for everyone aged 50 to 74, every two years. If you are aged 75 or over, you can still request a test, but you’ll need to contact the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Helpline at 0800 707 6060.

Stay informed, stay proactive, and take advantage of the resources available to you. Early screening could make all the difference.
