A different way to fight winter viruses

avoid winter cold

I’ve been following Dr. John Campbell on YouTube for several years now and value his experience and knowledge on many health-related matters.

I thought this 10-minute video where he talks about how he managed his recent respiratory virus symptoms with rest, hydration, iodine gargles and supplements would be helpful – after all, however hard we try, many of us may well have caught a winter bug, or be trying to recover from one.

In the video, Dr. Campbell shared his first-hand experience, detailing his symptoms and unique approach to managing them. Some of his methods challenge conventional practices, particularly the tendency to suppress fever, and offer an alternative perspective on how we treat viral illnesses. It’s well worth a watch!

Dr. Campbell experienced a progression of symptoms over about two weeks:

  • Days 1–3: Minor sore throat, worsening to severe discomfort.
  • Days 4–6: Fever spiked to 38.5°C, accompanied by nasal symptoms.
  • Days 7–10: Persistent low-grade fever (37.4°C), productive cough, malaise, brain fog, and reduced appetite.
  • Days 11–14: Nasal congestion cleared as mucus turned green; symptoms of headache, loss of smell, sneezing, and mild aches began.

What is his ‘alternative’ treatment approach?

Instead of focusing on suppressing symptoms like fever, Dr. Campbell prioritised measures to support his body’s natural immune response:

  • Rest – allowing his body to recover.
  • Nutrition – light meals with enough protein to sustain energy.
  • Supplementation – vitamin C, zinc, calcifediol (a vitamin D derivative).
  • Iodine gargles – to address throat discomfort and reduce viral load.
  • Hydration and warmth – staying well-hydrated and maintaining body temperature.
  • Avoiding antipyretics – letting his fever run its course to enhance immune function.

Why consider this approach?

Dr. Campbell’s management aligns with evidence suggesting fever plays a key role in fighting infections, as it helps the immune system function optimally. His emphasis on hydration, rest, and targeted nutrition emphasises the importance of supporting the body’s natural defences rather than simply masking symptoms.
