Why Gillian loves our Charcoal

Activated Charcoal

There are certain supplements you reach for every day – and then there are the ones you’re endlessly grateful to have when you really need them. For colon hydrotherapist and longstanding friend Gillian Edwards, our Charcoal is firmly in the second camp.

In this short video, Gillian shares why she regularly recommends our Charcoal capsules to clients and why it’s one of those surprisingly versatile staples she always keeps close by.

Why Charcoal?

Activated charcoal works a little differently to most supplements. Its highly porous surface acts like a sponge, helping to bind to unwanted substances in the digestive tract so they can be carried out of the body rather than absorbed. It’s this unique ‘binding’ action that makes it such a useful supplement to have on hand.

Some of the reasons people love our Charcoal

Helpful when feeling bloated or overfull – particularly after rich meals, travel, celebrations or one too many plates of BBQ food.

Post-holiday or post-weekend reset – when everything feels a bit sluggish, and you want to get your digestive system back on track.

Summer digestive support – warmer weather, eating outdoors and undercooked food can all increase the risk of stomach upsets. The UK sees around one million cases of food poisoning every year, and bacteria thrive more easily in warmer temperatures – one reason BBQ season requires extra care, and why you need to have a pot of Charcoal to hand.

Handy travel companion – many customers swear by keeping Charcoal in their bag when travelling, especially when routines, foods and mealtimes go off-piste.

For those “I ate something questionable” moments – we’ve all had them, and popping a couple of Charcoal capsules can really help nip things in the bud, as it ‘sweeps up’ any nasties lurking in your digestive tract.

The surprisingly versatile side of Charcoal

Beyond capsules, activated charcoal has become something of a cult ingredient.

You’ll find it in:

  • Black lemonades and wellness drinks (check out our popular Detoxing Lemonade recipe here)
  • Sourdoughs and burger buns
  • Homemade ‘detox’ lattes
  • …and even the occasional jet-black ice cream

(Though fair warning: it does turn everything gloriously black, so handle with care!)

One important thing to know

Because activated charcoal can bind to substances in the digestive tract, it can also interfere with the absorption of medications and supplements, so it’s best taken away from anything important (including prescriptions).

As Gillian explains in the video, it’s one of those products you might not use every single day – but when you need it, you’ll be very glad it’s in the cupboard.
