World Digestive Health Day, is observed annually on May 29th; it’s a global initiative led by the World Gastroenterology Organisation to raise awareness around digestive health and the many factors that can impact it.
This year’s theme – ‘Chronic Diarrhoea: Don’t Flush the Signs Away’ – highlights something that’s often overlooked or brushed aside but can be a sign that the body needs support.
Digestive upset, particularly diarrhoea, can have many different causes. It might be something acute, like food poisoning or a virus such as norovirus. It can also stem from more ongoing issues, including bile acid diarrhoea (BAD), or even be triggered by stress and anxiety – where an overstimulated ‘fight or flight’ response speeds everything up in the gut.
It’s also worth being aware that certain medications and everyday substances can play a role in disrupting digestive balance. These can include antibiotics, some forms of magnesium, medications such as Metformin (often prescribed for metabolic conditions including Type II Diabetes), acid reflux medications, and even artificial sweeteners – all of which may affect how the gut functions in different ways.
Although many people in the UK silently struggle with chronic digestive issues, it’s important to recognise that digestive health is also a major global health concern. In many lower-income countries, diarrhoeal disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in young children due to poor sanitation, unsafe water, and limited access to healthcare. While the causes may differ, it’s a powerful reminder that digestive health should never be dismissed or underestimated.

Whether occasional or ongoing, digestive symptoms can have a huge impact – causing discomfort, disruption, debilitation, and often a feeling of being out of control, which can affect confidence, independence, and overall quality of life.
However, there’s a lot you can do to support your digestive system and reduce the likelihood of problems – especially at times when your gut may be more vulnerable, such as when travelling or during periods of stress.
Simple, supportive steps can make all the difference:
- Charcoal can be incredibly helpful when travelling, offering support against digestive disturbances and helping to manage unwanted toxins
- Live Bacteria help build a strong, balanced microbiome – an essential foundation for both gut health and immune resilience
- Garlic provides natural support for the immune system, helping your body defend itself against unwanted bugs
Just as importantly, taking time to activate the body’s ‘rest and digest’ mode – through calming practices – can help counteract the effects of stress on the gut.
Digestive health is about balance, resilience, and giving your body the support it needs – whether that’s through the right supplements, the right habits, or simply understanding what your body is trying to tell you.
