Sluggish, bloated, tired? It’s not just you!

Winter Viruses

The days are still short, the mornings freezing, and let’s face it – life can feel like a bit of drag. What’s more, digestion tends to slow down when winter sets in. It’s easy to feel lethargic, bloated, or craving comfort foods, even when you promised yourself a fresh start in January. In winter, I’m a big fan of the humble hot water bottle.  I’ve used one countless times already this winter, popping it into the bed about 10 minutes before jumping into bed, then Kevin and I fighting over who is going to put their feet on it! The simple things in life, eh? Reminds me of a being a young girl and doing the same thing with my sister and brother – fighting for the hot water bottle! All three of us would sleep in the same big double bed during winter to keep warm. This was in the days before double-glazing, central heating, and on-tap hot water. We just had a coal fire. I remember running downstairs into the kitchen in the morning to put the gas cooker on to warm the room up before taking my dressing gown and pyjamas off and getting my school uniform on. Happy memories!

So how can you feel good in February?

Keep your energy, mood, and gut health on track with a few simple, winter-ready habits.

  • Stick with your Live Bacteria – daily probiotics help maintain healthy gut flora, supporting digestion, immunity, hormones, brain health and even energy levels – especially when winter slows things down.
  • Use Digestive Enzymes if needed – heavier meals and comfort foods can weigh you down. Digestive Enzymes support your body in breaking down proteins, fats, and carbs efficiently.
  • Prioritise warmth and hydration – warm drinks like herbal teas or warm lemon water help stimulate digestion and soothe the gut.
  • Keep moving – short walks, stretching, or gentle yoga not only boost circulation, but also support regular digestion and mood.
  • Recommit to routines – January routines are easy to drift from. Take a moment to reset your meal patterns, hydration, sleep, and supplements – small consistency counts.

Food tips to keep your digestion moving

  • Warm, cooked foods: Soups, stews, porridges – all easier on your digestive system than raw salads when it’s cold.
  • Root vegetables and fibre: Sweet potato, carrots, parsnips, and squash support regular digestion.
  • Fermented foods: Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, or miso help nourish gut-friendly bacteria.
  • Ginger, cinnamon, turmeric: Anti-inflammatory spices that soothe the gut and support digestion.

Remember – it’s a season, not a setback

Winter is tough, but your gut, energy, and wellbeing are resilient. Little habits add up: a probiotic in the morning, a nourishing stew followed by a warm digestive-friendly drink in the evening, and a mindful moment to move and breathe can make a big difference.
