At a recent conference, our Founder Linda attended a fascinating talk by Dr. James Goolnik, a leading biological dentist.
So what is a biological dentist?
Unlike conventional dentistry, biological (or holistic) dentistry looks at how oral health impacts the rest of the body. Biological dentists use biocompatible materials, focus on prevention, and understand that your mouth is the gateway to your overall health.
Dr. Goolnik’s talk focused on an intriguing – and slightly alarming – bacterium called Fusobacterium nucleatum, commonly found in the mouth. While it’s often associated with gum disease and dental plaque, researchers have also found it in the intestines of people with colorectal (bowel) cancer.
Recent studies show that people with colorectal cancer are five times more likely to have this bacterium in their stool compared to those without the disease. A particular type, called F. nucleatum animalis C2, seems able to survive the stomach’s acidity, travel to the gut, and even help tumours grow by creating an environment that supports cancer cells.
Scary? Perhaps – but it’s also empowering knowledge. Because bacteria are changeable. Good oral hygiene can help prevent the conditions that allow harmful bacteria to thrive.
That’s why Linda is so passionate about dental health.
