Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – it’s time to get checked

prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, yet many don’t realise they have it until it’s advanced. The disease often develops slowly, showing few or no symptoms in its early stages. This makes early detection critical – regular check-ups and PSA tests can make all the difference.

When Sir Chris Hoy – one of Britain’s most celebrated Olympians – shared his prostate cancer diagnosis last year, the world listened. Since then, thousands of men have taken action. Prostate Scotland has seen a 69% rise in website visitors, a 255% increase in men seeking information, and a 209% surge in symptom checker visits.

Sir Chris, who initially thought he had a simple shoulder strain, is now using his story to inspire others to be proactive about their health. “If sharing my story means even one man gets checked earlier and catches this disease in time, then it’s worth it,” he said. His experience underscores just how crucial early detection truly is.

The truth is, there’s no national screening programme for prostate cancer, and many men have no symptoms at all. That’s why it’s essential to speak to your GP about a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test – especially if you’re over 50 or have a family history of the disease. “I never thought this could happen to me,” Sir Chris admitted. “But if I’d caught it earlier, things might have been different. That’s why I want every man to be aware.”

Sir Chris has found new purpose in raising awareness, knowing his story has already helped other men catch their cancer early. “It gives me a sense of purpose – knowing that something positive can come out of this,” he shared.

Now, we’re asking you to be part of this movement. This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, take a moment to think about your health, (or the health of the men around you). Book a test. Start a conversation. It could save your life.
