Is the hot weather upsetting your tummy?

As I write this, forecasters are warning that we could see temperatures rival – or even exceed – those recorded during the famous summer of 1976.

I remember that summer well. The drought was so severe that standpipes appeared in the streets as water supplies came under pressure. We were advised to fill our baths with cold water and use it for drinking, cooking and washing because the water supply to homes could be interrupted. It certainly made us appreciate just how precious water is.

Today, most of us know the basics when hot weather arrives: drink more water, stay out of the strong daytime sun, keep blinds and curtains closed, and take things a little easier.

But did you know that hot weather can also affect your digestive health?

When it’s hot, we lose more than just water through sweat. We also lose important minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, which play a role in everything from energy levels and muscle function to healthy digestion.

If you do get dehydrated, it can slow things down in your digestive tract, This may contribute to symptoms such as bloating, constipation, acid reflux, indigestion and that sluggish, uncomfortable feeling many people notice during a heatwave.

But it’s not just hydration. Changes in routine during summer – holidays, barbecues, eating out more often, a few extra glasses of something cold, disrupted sleep and long journeys can all have an impact on digestive comfort.

Another important consideration is food poisoning. Hot weather can increase the risk of food-borne bugs. Foods left out for too long at barbecues, picnics or buffets provide the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply, while undercooked meats and poor food handling can increase the risk of food poisoning. A bout of food poisoning can disrupt the balance of your gut microbiome and leave digestive symptoms lingering long after the initial illness has passed.

Taking extra care with food storage, preparation and cooking during hot weather can help keep both you and your gut healthy throughout the summer.

summer gut tips

How can you support your gut during hot weather?

  • Drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty. Fill up several water bottles first thing in the morning and aim to have emptied all of them by the end of the day. Set an alarm every hour.
  • Include mineral-rich foods in your diet – leafy greens, avocados, bananas, nuts and seeds are all great choices.
  • Enjoy water-rich fruits and vegetables including watermelon, cucumber, berries and tomatoes.
  • Keep your fibre intake up, even when you’re opting for lighter meals.
  • Prioritise sleep wherever possible – hot nights can affect both your sleep quality and your digestive health.
  • If you’re travelling this summer, don’t forget to pack your gut-health essentials, including those all-important Charcoal capsules.

A happy gut doesn’t just depend on what you eat; it relies on good hydration, adequate minerals, healthy routines and looking after your body when it’s under extra stress – including during a heatwave.

Wishing you a healthy and happy summer!
