Watch the informative video discussion
Mental wellbeing is not a luxury in today’s demanding world; it’s the cornerstone of a fulfilling and balanced life. It’s a state of emotional, psychological, and social harmony that allows us to thrive and reach our full potential.
But how do you to navigate life with a sense of calm clarity, positive emotions, and the ability to cope with challenges effectively? This was at the heart of my most recent discussion with mental health expert, Rosalyn Palmer.
If you didn’t get the chance to watch our discussion live, here’s the full video for you to view when you have a moment.
Ros and I looked at ways to prioritise mental health in our fast-paced and often stressful society. We talked about the importance of having purpose in life, setting boundaries and having goals that are specific, measurable and achievable.
Life inevitably throws curveballs. Developing a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities for learning and growth can strengthen your mental fortitude.
We talked about the impact of the words ‘should’ and ‘must’ – seemingly small words that can pack a big punch. They are unnegotiable, tough, and often driven by fear.
- “I should eat healthy food all the time.”
- “I must be on time for that appointment.”
Overdoses of ‘shoulding’ and ‘musting’ take away our sense of choice, freedom and autonomy and this way of thinking can lead to feelings of fear, anxiety and depression.
Ros shared practical strategies and insights to cultivate a healthier, more resilient mindset. She talked about how, by embracing and empowering your mental wellbeing, you can unlock a life rich in meaning, connection, and emotional fulfilment.
We also talked about how a life in flow and balance comprises the best of 5 Fs: Faith, Fitness, Friends, Family and Finance. While finance plays a role in your mental wellness, the love of money won’t bring happiness and fulfilment; it’s what you do with your money that makes you happy.
I talked about how I was reminded of the importance of self-care when I had a rather discombobulated day, feeling out of sorts, so I got all my baking tins out and baked a cake, felt much better for it. Such a simple thing, but I just had to get out of my head. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as baking, practising meditation, or spending time in nature, is so very important. Taking time to de-stress and recharge our emotional batteries is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.
Nurturing mental wellbeing is a lifelong journey of self-discovery, resilience, and empowerment. To help you embrace your emotions and challenges, Ros has kindly shared her Getting Over Fear exercise sheet here, and a recording of a visualisation exercise that will also bring you closer to unlocking your full potential and leading a fulfilling, balanced life.
Remember, taking care of your mental wellbeing is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength and self-compassion.
