Cleansing recipes for a fresh start this January!

Detoxing Recipes

I am sure I speak for many of you when I say that January is my month to reset, getting my health back on track and helping my body recover from the festive excesses! Our bodies are usually very acidic at this time of year because of the extra sugar we have consumed during the festive period; our immune system will be depressed and more prone to viruses, bugs and infections.

Although our bodies are in constant detox mode, neutralising toxins and eliminating waste, at this time of year especially, we need a little extra help in this department. Lack of exercise, overeating and stress overwhelm the body and overexert our natural detoxification systems. Our detox organs – the kidneys, lungs, liver, colon, and skin – all need a little more support, so let me share some recipes that I hope will help kickstart your healthy eating journey this January.

These cleansing, tummy-friendly recipes will ensure that your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs as you start eating properly again, as well as getting plenty of sleep and drinking lots of water. They taste rather good too!

Blood Sugar Balancing Porridge

porridge with fresh berries

Oats are a great ingredient to start the day because they contain high amounts of soluble dietary fibre, which helps your body get a good cleanse first thing in the morning.

If you’re not a fan of oats, this porridge recipe can be made using different grains such as buckwheat, quinoa, brown rice, spelt or amaranth.

Porridge is a rich source of vitamin A, which can help the body fight off free radicals, as well as being high in beta-glucans which helps to keep the immune system strong by actually making your immune response smarter!

Gut Healing Spiced Celery Soup

Soups can help you stave off colds and flu, and they’re a great antidote for times when you are sick too. My vegan-friendly spiced celery soup is loaded with disease-fighting nutrients, and is comforting, flavourful and very quick to make – ready in just 15 minutes!

Celery is a good source of both soluble and insoluble fibre, which is important for digestive function. I always think of celery as an ‘intestinal broom’, cleaning and sweeping as it passes through the system.

Detoxing Charcoal Lemonade

This activated charcoal lemonade is a super healthy, detoxifying twist on a classic drink, and it only takes about 3 minutes to make.

Activated charcoal is associated with numerous health benefits such as treating hangovers, teeth whitening, expelling toxins from the body and anti-ageing. However, when mixed with the other ingredients in this recipe, the ‘black’ lemonade acquires a range of additional wholesome benefits – the activated charcoal captures toxins and chemicals in the body and expels them out; the antioxidants that come from lemon juice deliver the immune system with the strength it needs to protect the body effectively; what’s more it tastes great and gives me so much more daily energy without the side effects and withdrawal of coffee!
